Fota Island Resort helps Cork Chamber brings the UK Market to Cork

On Thursday the 30th May, we here at Fota Island Resort Hotel in Cork were delighted to host the Cork Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Conference.

Run in association with the British Irish Chamber, the event included guest speakers: Hugo MacNeill, Managing Director (Ireland) Goldman Sachs, Sharon Buckley, Group Commercial Director of Musgraves, Finbar Whyte, VP and Site Director of GlaxoSmithKline, Julia Lynes of EazyCity and Denis Kennelly of IBM Ireland.

Sharing their experience, insights and expertise of international trading with those that attended the annual conference that this year concentrated on all aspects of trade with the UK, delegates were introduced to a different format and had the opportunity to work together in small focus groups.

Our versatile conference venue in Cork was utilised by the conference delegates who during breaks and networking opportunities where able to watch and engage with Jonathan Healy’s Newstalk programme, which we broadcast live from the foyer of the hotel, and a formal Lunch with the British Ambassador, HE Dominick Chilcott followed and was served in our Fota Hotel Restaurant.

Fota Island Resort announces partnership with UCC Mardyke Arena

Big Races on Land and at Sea in Cork this June

The beginning of June in Cork looks to be lively and entertaining both on shore and off shore, as the city hosts its annual marathon on Monday 3rd June and its Ocean to City Maritime Festival from 1st -10th June 2013.

The Cork City Marathon on Monday 3rd June includes the main marathon, half marathon, team relay and youth relay events. An official 26 miles and 385 yards marathon course, Cork is a full member of the AIMS – Association of International Marathons and Distance Races and since the revival of the Cork City Marathon in 2007 after a break of some 21 years, there has been a renewed enthusiasm for the event and year on year it attracts even more participants from around the county, country and globe.

The main marathon and team relay start at 9am sharp on St Patrick’s Street, with the wheelchair marathon starting a few minutes before.  The half marathon starts at 10:30 from Skehard Road, Mahon, and due to parking facilities, participants will be taken by buses from city hall to this starting location.

Taking place from the 1st of June through to the 10th of June is one of Ireland’s largest combined rowing races and maritime festival’s – Ocean to City, which celebrates Cork’s unique maritime heritage and natural harbour,

The festival includes The Big Race or An Rás Mór, a 15 nautical mile rowing race that attracts entries from across the world and sees participants compete in one of four races over different distances through Cork Harbour. The longest being the Ocean Course from Crosshaven to Point to Cobh, Monkstown and through Lough Mahon to Lapp’s Quay in the city. This course can be tackled as a relay team, with crews changing at Monkstown. For anyone who has not yet registered – the final closing date is midnight Saturday 25th May.

A fun family friendly festival taking place over the first 10 days of June, it has plenty for everyone including harbour cruises, Inter-firm Dragon Boat Challenge, Treasure Hunt, Navy tours, angling trips, films and talks, food and craft markets, music and lots more free family entertainment.

Work has begun on New Indoor Conservation Facility at Fota

Work has begun for our neighbours Fota Wildlife Park on their new indoor animal care and conservation centre for endangered species.

Creating new additional jobs at Fota across animal health and veterinary to animal care and support staff, the development of the Animal Care and Conservation Centre will cost approximately €600,000, which has been supported by an investment grant from the SECAD (South and East Cork Area Development) of €200,000

The Conservation Centre development will house native and globally endangered species, and will enable the Park to become an all-weather attraction and to extend its visitor season into the winter months, which is great news for tourists and visitors who choose to explore Cork in the colder season.

Located next to our luxury Cork Hotel, the Fota Wildlife Park is currently the most visited tourist attraction in the South West of Ireland and the addition of the new animal care and conservation centre that is expected to be completed by the end of this year and will open in early 2014 is sure to only increase visitor numbers.

Free Entry to Spike Island near Cobh

Spike Island located of the coast of Cork, close to our hotel near Cobh has hosted a monastery, a fortress and a prison within its 104 acres, all of which have left their mark.

A popular tourist attraction and ones of the things to do and see in Cork, a new phase in Spike Island‘s history began in July 2010 as the State handed control of the Island back over to Cork County Council and by doing so ended two centuries of institutional use.

With the handover, Cork County Council has created a unique visitor experience at this one of Ireland’s most historic landmarks, which is pleased to now offer a special discounted rate and FREE entry to the Island or Fort Mitchel, although it is worth noting that whilst entrance to Spike Island will not incur a charge, there will still be a charge for the ferry that provides access to the Island.

Ferry Charges are currently; €8 per adult and €5 per child and frequency of the Ferry Service from Sunday 14th April, a more regular ferry services will be available, with the ferry departing from Kennedy Pier in Cobh every Sunday during April at 12pm and again at 2pm. Then from May, this service will be increased with the ferry departing on both Saturday and Sunday’s at 12pm and again at 2pm, and then from June, a daily ferry service will be available, and from Saturday 1st June, the ferry departing from Cobh will also stop at Monkstown at 12:15pm.

This year also whilst on the island, visitors will be able to travel without being part of a tour guided group, thus allowing them to enjoy the recently opened walkway around the perimeter of the Fort at the their leisure.

More acts announced for Live at the Marquee in Cork this summer

Monday it was announced that four more popular music acts were to perform gigs for Live At The Marque this summer, and would join the likes of The Boomtown Rats, Christy Moore, The Coronas, Elton John, Elvis Costello, The National, Olly Murs, Sting, The Wanted and ZZ Top in the growing line up of top class international acts playing in Cork.

Those acts that were announced were, X Factor winners and popular girl band Little Mix on 14th June, rapper and songwriter Ke$ha on 3rd July, Irish rock group Bell X1 on 4th July and Irish star Imelda May on 9th July.

A unique venue that is popular with artists, Live at the Marquee is now in its ninth year of summer gigs and continues to offer a line up that has something for everyone, and its location at the Showgrounds on Monaghan Road is suitably close to Cork’s top attractions and Cork Hotels.
