Experience the Majors at the Fota Island Golf Resort Ireland

Following the success of our own version of the Augusta experience during the Golf Masters, the Fota Island Golf Resort Ireland is please to introduce another great themed series of events that will coincide with the next three golf majors!

Based on the winning formula that saw us here at Fota Island Golf Club in Cork channel a small bit of Georgia during Masters Week, the Open Singles competitions will be held over the course of the next 3 majors along with some delicious après golf cooking reflective of each Major!

Open singles competitions will take place on:
13th – 16th June to coincide with the US Open
18th – 21st July to coincide with the Open Championship in Scotland
8th – 11th August to coincide with the PGA Championship in New York

Take to our Deerpark Course and be inspired by the pros this summer during some of the most enjoyable golf tournaments from around the world. Emulate your hero’s and make your own bit of history, for the cost to enter each Open Singles competition is just €35 per golfer and the winner of each event will be entered into a play-off to win a tailor made set of irons!

Once the hard work is done on the greens and the fairways, relax in the Spike Bar, where you can enjoy some seriously good themed cuisine from the chefs of our Cork Restaurants, such as Philly cheesesteak sandwich, Harrisburg style meatloaf and grand cherry pie with clotted cream, to make you feel like you’re dining in Pennsylvania this June!

Then in July, the themed menu focuses on Scotland, with kippers with sautéed curly kale and creamed potatoes, Scotch pie with rumbledethumps and cranachan for afters, to be indulged in over the Open Championship weekend. Before finally, in August, while the PGA Championship is in full swing in New York, Fota Island Golf Club guests can enjoy New York style hot dogs topped with fried onions, mustard, and ketchup with slaw salad and French fries, New Yorker thin crust pizza with tomato sauce, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red peppers and buffalo mozzarella cheese, and vanilla baked cheesecake with strawberry compote.

Fota Island Resort Golf Course is named in the top 100

We were delighted to discover that our golf course in Cork was named in Golf Weeks top 100 modern course in Great Britain and Ireland.

To be considered a modern golf course, those named had to be created no earlier than 1960 and we were thrilled to be listed at number 32 on the best Great Britain and Ireland modern courses list!

Designed in 1993 by Irish Ryder Cup star Christy O’Connor Jr. and twice English Amateur Champion Peter McEvoy under the direction of Jeff Howes, our wonderful Golf Club at the Fota Island Resort Hotel Cork is just a few minutes’ drive from Cork City’s international airport and passenger ferry terminal and located in the heart of a 780 acre estate which is included in “The Inventory of Outstanding Landscapes in Ireland”.

Award Winning Golf Facilities at Fota Island Resort Cork

We here at the Fota Island Resort hotel in Cork are always delighted to be recognised by the industry for our world class facilities, so we were thrilled to have been awarded the winners of the “Best Golf Resort Munster” by the Golfers Guide to Ireland recently.

Golf Competitions and Events at Fota Island Resort in Cork

Located just a few minutes from Cork City and Cork’s International Airport on a private island, our luxurious golf resort in Ireland consists of splendid woodlands that are woven into three challenging championship courses, all of which in the traditional mode feature strategically placed bunkers and rolling putting greens!

In fact our Deerpark Golf Course has played host to the Irish Open in 2001, which was won by Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, and again in 2002 when Soren Hansen from Denmark took the winning honours.

No more happier than when they are being played upon, we have plenty of single series and team events and competitions taking place on our Cork Golf Courses during the cold and frosty months of January and February. Starting with our Spring Open Single Series on Wednesday 30th January that continues on to Wednesday’s during February, taking place on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th, and our Open Senior Team of Four Event that takes place on Monday 11th February and our Resort Juvenile Open Competition that is happening on Thursday 14th February.

Scot Saltman wins PGA Europro Audi Cork Irish Masters at Fota Golf Resort Ireland

Scotsman Elliot Saltman was the eventual winner of the PGA Europro Audi Cork Irish Masters which took place on our championship Deerpark Course at Fota Island Resort.

Having just qualified for the 2012 British Open Championship, Saltman completed the course with a 10-under-par 61 comfortably ahead of Welshman Stuart Manley in second place, Scot Duncan Stewart in third and England’s Zane Scotland in fourth.

Winning the first prize cheque of €12,600 definitely sweetened Saltman’s decision to play in the Audi Masters, which was again held here at the luxury hotel in Cork, the Fota Island Resort, and started less than 24 hours after he had qualified for the British Open. When asked about his decision to play so soon after, Saltman said: “A lot of people asked after I qualified for The Open whether I’d been taking a couple of weeks off to relax but everything was booked. The hardest thing was getting up the next morning but once I got here it was great and Ireland’s a great place to be.

The tournament proved to be a great success and the great condition of Deerpark Course and the wonderful facilities at our luxury Golf Resort Ireland were enjoyed by golfers, spectators and commentators with tweets from golfer Sandeep Grewal reading “Thank you to @AudiCork and @fotaisland for putting on a great event this week!! The Irish know how to it’s done!!” and Sky Sports presenter Charlie Webster stating “Lovely day filming Audi Cork Irish Masters at very beautiful @fotaisland nicest people ever wish I could stay!”

Fota Island Golf Club hosts Audi Cork Irish Masters once again

After a successful debut in 2011, we welcome back the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour to our Golf Course in Cork this July for the second Audi Cork Irish Masters.

Hosted at our luxury Golf Hotel in Cork, the EuroPro Tour will take place 4th – 6th July 2012 on one of our championship golf courses set in the beautiful parkland of Fota Island.

The 2011 Audi Cork Irish Masters took place on Belvelly, but this year the event will take place on Deerpark. A par 71, 692-yard course which has twice hosted to the Irish Open, this is just one of our three championship golf courses that is popular with pro and amateur golfers, who are impressed by the strategic bunkering, receptive greens and picturesque views, especially from the 18th Hole.

Chosen by Irish Golfer Pádriag Harrington as his favourite 18th hole, he once said when describing the impressive 18th Island green, a par 5, narrow tree-lined shot to the top of the hill and on to the island green in front of the club house, “I don’t think you can get a more beautiful golf hole” before adding “the setting is gorgeous… you get to the top of the hill and it is all presented to you… the clubhouse, the lake, mature trees, bunkers, shrubs – magnificent. And doesn’t everybody like being faced with a downhill shot to a big green!”

Event organisers have praised the facilities at the Fota Island Resort, known for its 5 star Hotel, Luxury Spa, Conferencing Facilities and Self Catering Apartments, as well as superb golf courses; “There is little doubt that Fota Island Resort provides one of the best courses on the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour,” says Danny Nickless, Operations Manager for the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour. “Last season’s event on The Belvelly was incredibly successful and Fota Island Resort proved a big hit with the players. Fota Island Resort will again provide a challenging, scenic and exciting test for our players on The Deerpark this year, and we’re sure they will relish returning to the venue in July.”

A field of 168 players will take part in the 3 day Audi Cork Irish Masters this year, all eager to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Paul Reed, who claimed the £10,000 winner’s cheque. All golfers taking part will play two rounds, with the top 50 players plus ties progressing to the 3rd and final decisive day.

Entry for spectators is free and many supporters and golf fans are expected to visit the 5 star Fota Island Resort near Cork to enjoy the event that will also be filmed for a two-hour highlights show to be broadcast on Sky Sports
